Dear Public Health Officer,
I am writing to alert you to a health and safety hazard that has gone unnoticed. After spending a week over here, I believe this location is unsafe to live in there. I am personally witnessing all that I saw over there.
All rooms of the hostel had limited space to walk for residents, even though all the bunk beds were squashed together, making them appear like bees in a hive. Correspondingly, the lighting in the hostel was in pathetic condition. Most of the bulbs were continuously flickering, proving to be a nuisance for the people at the top bunkers. The windows were not sliding and were stuck as if by design. There was a lack of an adequate ventilation system for air and light in the building. In addition, I have viewed a coating of dead flies accumulated on the windows. A layer of dried toothpaste was stacked on the sink while I was in the washroom.
What concerned me the most was that there isn’t a proper manager assigned to supervise the hostel permanently. The receptionist was uninterested in performing his job and was always busy enjoying the courtyard. He vacated his desk unattended, which showed irresponsibility at the highest level.
In the hostel, residents’ were even disregarding the management instructions. Although no one was in charge, they were supposed to keep their area clean. Yet, they were not interested in taking responsibility for cleaning the dishes and usually left them unwashed in the kitchen. Water constantly filled up the sink. I was surprised to find free food items in the fridge that had passed their expiration date.
Mr Officer, I am deeply concerned about these unsanitary conditions and their impacts that could harm the people living there. They may fall victim to vulnerable diseases due to this filthiness. The residents are also facing other consequences like lack of privacy. Their stay in a narrow area with numerous people might create a sense of imprisonment. Since the absence of management, theft could become a phenomenon in future.
Besides, a lack of discipline can lead students to engage in destructive activities. Their staying up till midnight with roommates for nonproductive reasons can cause students to disrupt a healthy routine. Above all, the mismanagement and indisciplined manner of the hotel is developing a harmful environment. Hence, I request the department of health to shut down this place. I hope the department will take action to shut down this unhealthy place to sustain its reputation.
