Dear Public Health Officer,
I am writing to alert you to a health and safety hazard that has gone unnoticed. After spending a week in the hostel, I am convinced that this place is unsafe to live in. I am personally witnessing all that I saw over there.
First of all, there was a limited amount of space to walk in all the dorm rooms, even though all the bunk beds were pushed together, making them look like bees in a hive. Correspondingly, the hostel’s lighting was in a pathetic condition. Most of the bulbs flickered continuously, becoming a nuisance for the people in the top bunkers. The windows were not sliding and were stuck as if by design. The ventilation system was inadequate for providing insufficient air and light in the building.
In addition, I have viewed a coating of dead flies accumulated on the windows, while in the washroom, a layer of dried toothpaste was stacked on the sink, which looked like it had not been cleaned for a long time. What concerned me the most was that there wasn’t a permanent manager assigned to supervise the hostel. The receptionist was uninterested in performing his job and was always busy enjoying the courtyard. The manager’s desk was always unattended, which showed irresponsibility at the highest level.
On the other hand, the hostel’s residents were even ignoring hygiene standards. No one was in charge of keeping the corridor area clean. In the kitchen, the dishes were usually left unwashed. The sink was always filled with water, and management showed no interest in maintenance. When I opened the fridge, I was surprised to find expired food items.
Mr Officer, it was a disappointing situation for me, as I had stayed in an unhygienic environment for a week. I endured a lot personally, and eventually I shifted to another hostel. However, I am still deeply concerned about the hostel’s unsanitary conditions, because the filth could cause residents to fall victim to dangerous diseases.
Furthermore, due to a lack of discipline in the hostel, students engage in destructive activities. Staying up late with roommates for unproductive reasons disrupts a healthy routine. Apart from it, in the absence of management, the hostel is not secure for residents, and theft could become a phenomenon.
In conclusion, the hostel’s mismanagement and carelessness are creating a harmful atmosphere. I endeavoured to contact the hostel’s authorities to submit my complaint, but was unsuccessful. Thus, I urge the Department of Health to take action on my complaint. I hope the department will take measures and shut down this place to sustain its reputation.
